Domenica 11 giugno andrà in scena l’edizione 2017 della più antica Classica di Germania, la Rund um Koln. Nato nel 1908 ed inizialmente organizzato dalla Allgemeine Radfahrer-Union, il Giro di Colonia fu riservato per alcuni anni ai dilettanti, fino ad essere definitivamente conteso dai professionisti dal 1990 in poi.
In mezzo a tante vittorie di atleti di casa, si contano tre successi italiani: Gaetano Belloni e Alfredo Binda negli anni Trenta e Gian Matteo Fagnini nel 2001. Ultimo azzurro a salire sul podio fu Giacomo Nizzolo, terzo nel 2011. Il campione uscente è l’olandese Dylan Groenewegen.
Ci troviamo a Colonia, la più grande città del Land della Renania Settentrionale-Vestfalia: da qui parte e arriva la 101^ edizione della corsa. Il chilometraggio previsto è di 206.1 km, caratterizzati da diversi saliscendi, ma che raramente finiscono con l’apportare una severa selezione.
Sono sei, per la precisione, i Gran Premi della Montagna collocati dagli organizzatori: si tratta di Agathaberg, Dimberg, Dombach, Schloss Bensberg. Questi ultimi due saranno riaffrontati nuovamente nel finale, ma l’ultimo scollinamento avverrà a poco meno di quaranta chilometri all’arrivo. Gli sprinter, di conseguenza, potranno superare indenni tali strappetti e giocarsi tutti in volata.

Dorsale numero uno per il campione uscente Dylan Groenewegen (LottoNL-Jumbo). Tra i maggiori contendenti, il secondo piazzato di dodici mesi fa Andre Greipel (Lotto Soudal), oltreché Sam Bennett (Bora-Hansgrohe) e Maxim Belkov (Katusha-Alpecin), leader dei WorldTeam presenti in gara.
Tre gli italiani presenti: Cesare Benedetti e Matteo Pelucchi della Bora-Hansgrohe, Carmelo Foti della Leopard.
