Tour of the Alps 2021, prova di forza di Simon Yates

Grande prova di forza di Simon Yates: il britannico del Team BikeExchange si impone nella seconda tappa del Tour of the Alps 2021 tagliando indisturbato il traguardo di Feichten im Kaunertal. Per lui arriva anche la maglia di leader della generale.

Di nuovo un basso chilometraggio – poco più di 120 km – ma ancora tante insidie al Giro delle Alpi. Si parte da Innsbruck, laddove si è conclusa la prima frazione, e si affrontano quasi tremila metri di dislivello concentrati nella seconda parte di gara.

Ritmo molto elevato sin dall’avvio, ma ciò non impedisce il formarsi della fuga, a comporre la quale sono Reuben Thompson (Groupama-FDJ), Janse Van Rensburg (Qhubeka-Assos), Davide Bais (Eolo-Kometa), Mathias Vacek (Gazprom-Rusvelo), Morten Hulgaard (Uno-X) e Felix Engelhardt (Tirol-KTM).

Primo momento clou della giornata è la scalata a Piller Sattel, dal versante di Kaunergrat (7,5 km al 9,3%, 1a cat.), verso la cui cima i fuggitivi sono ormai ripresi e Nairo Quintana (Arkea-Samsic) prova a forzare il ritmo, operando una discreta selezione.

Ma poi lo stesso colombiano va in difficoltà sotto i colpi di Pavel Sivakov (Ineos Grenadiers) e Simon Yates. Ed è quest’ultimo a fare il vuoto prima in salita, poi sulla successiva discesa. Nessuno riesce a stargli dietro e, secondo dopo secondo, arriva ad accumulare un margine rassicurante per poter tagliare in maniera vincente il traguardo.

Riesce a limitare i danni, ma parte forse troppo tardi Pavel Sivakov, che chiude a 41″ dal vincitore, nuovo leader della classifica generale proprio davanti al russo. Terzo posto per Daniel Martin (Israel Start Up Nation) a 58″.
