Anteprima Volta a Catalunya 2018

Dal 19 al 25 marzo si svolge l’edizione 2018 della corsa a tappe più antica di Spagna, la terza più longeva al mondo dopo Giro e Tour: si tratta della Volta a Catalunya o, più semplicemente, del Giro della Catalogna, gara appartenente al circuito WorldTour, giunta alla 98^ edizione. Il record di successi spetta a Mariano Canardo, sette volte primo tra gli anni Venti e Trenta. Dieci le vittorie azzurre, ma soltanto due negli ultimi decenni: Claudio Chiappucci nel 1994 e Michele Scarponi nel 2011. L’ultimo azzurro a salire sul podio è stato Domenico Pozzovivo nel 2015. Il campione uscente è Alejandro Valverde.

 Siamo in Spagna, ma da queste parti bisogna dire “siamo in Catalogna”, comunità autonoma che rivendica l’indipendenza da Madrid. Sette le tappe in programma, mai scontate sui terreni iberici. Si parte con una frazione con partenza e arrivo a Calella, che presenta un solo GPM di terza categoria a venti chilometri all’arrivo, sufficiente per far fuori i velocisti puri.

Più insidiosa la seconda giornata in cui, soli 10 km prima del traguardo di Valls, c’è l’Alt de Lilla (seconda categoria), probabile trampolino di lancio per eventuali attacchi. Arrivo in salita il terzo giorno a Vallter 2000 (12.7 km al 7.4%) dopo aver affrontato già tre ascese di prima categoria. Selettiva anche la quarta frazione, con il Coll de la Creusta (HC) ai meno quaranta e il prima categoria di La Masella (8.6 km al 6.5%) appena prima del traguardo di La Molina.

Tre nuove asperità anche il quinto giorno verso Val d’Aran, compresa l’ultima che, pur non classificata come GPM, è lunga ben 11 km ed è posta a pochi chilometri dalla conclusione. Facile la frazione di Torrefarrera il penultimo giorno, mentre l’ultima tappa presenta il tradizionale circuito di Barcellona con il Montjuic (2 km al 5.6%) da ripetere per otto volte, ultima occasione di ribaltare la classifica generale.

STARTLIST Alle 18 WorldTour ammesse di diritto si affiancano 7 Professional che hanno ottenuto la wild card: sono ovviamente le tre spagnole Caja Rural – RGA, Burgos – BH e Basque Country Murias Taldea, alle quali si aggiungono le due francesi Cofidis e Fortuneo – Samsic, la colombiana Manzana Postobon e l’israeliana Cycling Academy.

Tanti i grandi nomi delle corse a tappe presenti in Catalogna. Tra gli altri, il campione uscente Alejandro Valverde e il suo compagno in Movistar Nairo Quintana, vincitore l’anno precedente; Sergio Henao ed Egan Bernal (Team Sky); Simon e Adam Yates ed Esteban Chaves (Mitchelton – Scott); Rigoberto Uran (EF Drapac); Davide Formolo (Bora – Hansgrohe); Thibaut Pinot (Groupama  -FDJ); Fabio Aru e Daniel Martin (UAE Team Emirates); Louis Meintjes (Dimension Data); Warren Barguil (Fortuneo-Samsic); Tejay Van Garderen (Bmc); Bob Jungels (Quick Step Floors); Jarlinson Pantano (Trek – Segafredo); Mathias Frank (Ag2R La Mondiale).
